Air bubbles in iron ore green pellets due to flotation reagent: characterization by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microtomography

Iron ore concentrate is enriched by flotation prior to form iron ore green pellets in order to reduce phosphorus content in the ore concentrate. A flotation reagent is used in this process and it is known to incorporate air bubbles and eventually deteriorate the strength of the pellets. These bubbles were therefore characterized both qualitatively and quantitatively by cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), image analysis (IA) of SEM micrographs and X-ray microtomography (XMT). In order to observe the influence of the flotation reagent on bubble formation, pellets with and without addition of extra flotation reagent prior to balling were prepared and compared using these techniques.
